International organisations in Vienna

The UK Mission represents the UK in several Vienna-based international organisations. These include:

International Atomic Energy Agency

The largest of the international organisations with which the UK Mission deals is the International Atomic Energy Agency  (IAEA). The UK is the fourth largest contributor to the Agency's budget. In 2006, the UK paid $ 15.9 million to the Regular Budget, $ 4.6 million to the Technical Co-operation Fund and a further $ 1 million in additional voluntary contributions.

United Nations Industrial Development Organisation

The UK is an important member and major funder (around 8% of the Regular Budget) of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). The aim of UNIDO is to promote sustainable industrial development in developing countries and countries with economies in transition, in order to contribute to improving the living conditions in those countries. The UK Mission in Vienna is the interface between UNIDO and the Department for International Development, which is the ministry responsible for the UK’s policy towards UNIDO. The Mission also liaises with the UK Investment and Technology Promotion Office for UNIDO, which is based in the UK.

UN Office of Drugs and Crime

The UK is very active in co-operation with the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Last year we disbursed nearly US$ 5 million. Our contribution, in addition to our standard UN share of the regular budget (5.3%), was about 9% of the UNODC’s support and programme budget. The UK has lead responsibility internationally for counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan, therefore much of the work it does currently with UNODC is focussed on co-operation in this area. Along with UNODC and the Afghan Government, the UK is pursuing a counter-narcotics strategy which addresses all aspects of counter-narcotics work: law enforcement, judicial reform, demand reduction, alternative livelihoods and public awareness raising.

Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO

The Mission deals with the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), which is working to set up a world-wide network of 321 monitoring stations. The UK, which is one of the 44 states whose ratification is needed for the Treaty to enter into force, ratified the Treaty in April 1998, jointly with France, the first Nuclear Weapon States to do so.

Export control regimes

The Mission covers a number of export control regimes: the Wassenaar Arrangement (conventional arms); the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Zangger Committee (nuclear material and equipment).

Other UN Organisations

In addition, the UK also contributes significantly to other UN organisations in Vienna, such as the Office of Outer Space Affairs (OOSA) and the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership

The Mission works closely with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). The REEEP, which is a partnership dedicated to accelerate and expand the global market for renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, has its International Secretariat in Vienna. The UK is a founding partner of the REEEP.
