How to register a birth

British citizens can register the birth of a child born in Austria at the Embassy's Consular Section. Please note that this is not a requirement; it is purely voluntary and will not lead to any extra rights regarding the nationality of your child.

To register a birth, you will need to present the following documents:

·         Consular birth registration form (available from the Embassy)

·         Birth certificates of child and parents

·         Passport(s) of British parent(s)

·         Marriage certificate

·         The relevant fee (see the list of consular fees)

Please note that when you register a birth at the Embassy

·         this does not automatically mean that the birth is registered in the UK as well. Registration in the UK will take place later, when the Embassy sends its annual return to the General Records Office

·         this does not lead to any extra rights in the UK or elsewhere. The relevant nationality document is always the valid British passport.
