How to legalise a document
The Consular Section at the British Embassy and regional Consulates in Austria can receive affidavits and statutory declarations and witness signatures on legal documents for use in the UK, British Overseas Territories and some Commonwealth countries not represented in Austria. They can also perform these services for documents originating from the UK, British Overseas Territories and some Commonwealth countries for use in Austria.

Legalising documents and obtaining an apostille ("Überbeglaubigung")
Foreign authorities sometimes need official confirmation that a British document, such as a birth or marriage certificate or an education document, is genuine. This is done by the Legalisation Office at the Foreign Office in Milton Keynes, by attaching an apostille: a legalisation certificate which confirms that a signature, seal or stamp appearing on a document is genuine. Please note that this service incurs a fee; for further information, visit the Legalisation Office website.
Although Consular Section could theoretically obtain an apostille from the Legalisation Office on your behalf, please note that there would be a considerable administrative charge for forwarding the documents (roughly twice the amount of the actual Legalisation Office fee per document), in addition to the Legalisation Office's fee.
