Applying for a passport

The Consular Section of the British Embassy in Vienna offers a full passport service to British nationals. This includes first time applications, replacements for lost or stolen passports, passport renewals, and emergency passports. The Consular Section in Vienna is the only office in Austria that can accept and process passport applications. You can, however, also apply for a passport at your nearest regional British Consulate, who then forward your application to Vienna for processing.

We issue passports to British citizens, British nationals (Overseas) (BNO), British Overseas Territories citizens (BOTC), British overseas citizens (BOC), British subjects and British protected persons. We can also provide emergency passports for citizens of certain Commonwealth countries not represented in Austria.

Please note that you do not have to wait until your passport is about to expire or has expired, before you renew it. When you renew your passport, any period of validity (up to a maximum of nine months) will be credited to your new passport, in addition to the normal 10-year validity of the passport. We encourage you to make use of this provision and to renew your passport well before its expiry date. Please note that you will NOT be allowed to keep your present passport while waiting for the replacement to be processed as your passport will be cancelled during the renewal process.

British nationals who are resident overseas can also apply for a passport at the Identity and Passport Service in person while you are visiting the UK. In order to do this, you need to make an appointment with the IPS in the UK, and you must provide an address in the UK to which the passport may be posted. Applicants will have to be available at this address to sign for the receipt of the passport. Please note that IPS do not accept applications by post or e-mail if you live abroad.
